Learn Therapy Skills by Example: Counseling & Psychotherapy Transcripts and Counseling and Therapy in Video

Two library databases are full of examples of clinical work.

The Counseling and Therapy in Video database is a collection of over 300 streaming videos with transcripts. Access them any time to review a particular approach to therapy or ideas for how to work with particular issues with a client.

To see examples of video content, try searching for the word spiritual in the Counseling and Therapy in Video database.

The Counseling & Psychotherapy Transcripts database is a huge text-based repository of clinical interactions, case studies and reference works.

To see examples of Transcripts content, try searching for Carl Rogers in the Transcripts database.

Both databases can be found on the Access Databases page. If you are off campus, you will need your ITP Library database passwords to access the databases. Email us at refdesk@itp.edu if you need any help.

Chronicle of Higher Education Online: RSS Feeds

One way to keep up with your favorite sections of the Chronicle of Higher Education is to use the RSS feeds. Pick out the RSS Feeds that you like from the CHE Site Map page. All of the major sections of the site have their own RSS feed. Click on the RSS link next to the section of interest. You can either follow the directions for adding it to your browser's RSS reader or you can copy the feed address into your favorite RSS reader and you are all set!

When you are on campus, you will not need ITP Library database logins because you are already authenticated. It will be easy to use the links to go directly to the full article. When you are off campus, the authentication won't be automatic for some articles that are considered premium content. If you link to the article and see a golden key, that means you need to log in to see the full content.

When you need to log in to see full content, you will copy the text or just take note of the article title you want from the alerting newsletters above, go to the Access Online Databases page, click on the Chronicle of Higher Education Online link and put the article title into the chronicle.edu search box at the upper right.

10,000 Ebooks in ITP Library Catalog

Over the past several months, we have been working on adding ways to easily find ebooks in our collections. Since we have over 72,000 ebooks and we add more monthly if not weekly, we wanted to give our patrons more ways to quickly discover and enjoy them. We recently loaded records for over 10,000 ebooks into our library catalog so that you can look for print books and ebooks all in one process. We will be working on loading more but 10,000 is a good start.

How do you find ebooks in the library catalog?
The quickest way, for now, is to search for Electronic books as a subject. Ask a reference librarian for help with your search.

How can you tell if a title is an ebook or not?
Here is an example of what the brief record of an ebook will look like:

The title will be followed by [electronic resource] and the call number will be followed by eb.

To access the ebook, click on the title link to open the full library record and look for the Electronic Access link:

Even though we have added this additional way to find ebooks, you can always go directly to the specific ebook collection and search as well. This new access is simply a way of giving you options.

ITP Library Catalog Now Ready for Mobile

NEW Journal Collection: JSTOR Arts & Sciences III Archive Collection

The ITP Library has a new database! We now have access to a piece of a prominent collection of databases: JSTOR. We have added JSTOR’s Arts & Sciences III Archive Collection to our Access Online Databases page. JSTOR has many database collections that index journals in arts and sciences in many fields: arts, folklore, history, religion, and women’s studies, with some full text available.

Public libraries in large metropolitan areas, (for example, San Francisco Public Library) and large universities may have additional collections of JSTOR’s databases. Our Arts & Sciences III Collection has full text from 225 journals. Articles are primarily 3 years old and older.

Mobile Options for ITP Library Patrons

If you have a smart phone or other mobile device, you might wonder what ITP Library resources are ready for your device. All resources can be used in a browser, but to experience content comfortably on a small screen, the following resources have anticipated this need:

Searching and Finding

The following databases have a browser-based mobile option:

EbscoHost - log in as usual and then choose the mobile option.

Annual Reviews - automatically switches to mobile.

Reading and Learning

Library Blog - Yes, the library blog was recently converted to be smart phone ready. Just go to the blog's URL and it is all there and easy to read. Save the main blog page URL on your smart phone to browse the helpful tips anywhere.

PDFs - The library's resources are chock full of full text in PDF and other formats. PDFs are easy to transfer to many mobile devices for that long trip or late night reading. PDFs can be downloaded or emailed for you to access when you are ready. Once they are on your device, web access is optional.

There are many ways to keep up with the Chronicle of Higher Education. We will be posting about the various ways in the next few months.

The Chronicle of Higher Education Online is an extensive news source with information about academia, educational technology, and career opportunities. The articles and blogs have interesting and sometimes controversial discussions. If you set up a free personal account you can participate in the discussions with others on other campuses and sign up for free e-newsletters.

It is extremely easy to access the Chronicle on campus. You are already authenticated and will have access to all premium content as well as current and archived articles. Bookmark it in your browser and check it out while you are enjoying your morning tea.

You can still access the Chronicle from off campus too, but you will need link from the library's Access Databases page and use your database logins.

Creating Free Accounts in Library Databases

If you have never tried it before, now is the perfect time to try signing up for free accounts in library databases.

What does this mean? Some of the ITP Library databases offer a free account which enables you to save searches, alerts, and sometimes documents. In other words, it saves you time and work in the future and it only takes a few minutes.

How to Start

First, go to the Access Online Databases page and link to ProQuest.

In ProQuest, the free account is called MyResearch.
Click on the Sign In link in the upper right corner.
Click on the Create a My Research account link and fill out the appropriate information
Now add some searches: go back to the search by clicking on the Search link at the upper left and try a search.
You can now save a search, a search alert, or checkmark documents to save them to your account.

The next time you go to ProQuest, you can go back, log in and use those searches and documents again. If you set up alerts, you will get email updates on these searches. We find that students in dissertation phase and faculty who love to stay aware of their research areas love these features.

ProQuest has an exciting new interface, which includes both current ProQuest and CSA databases!
The library's migration to the new ProQuest interface took place on the evening of August 8th, 2011. We will no longer have our current CSA and ProQuest interfaces--all the databases will be searchable through one brand new interface.

ITP Doctoral Symposium Videos Online

During Spring 2011, ITP students prepared and presented the first doctoral symposium. The theme was "Socially Engaged Transpersonal Research." Keynotes were Dorothy Fadiman and Judy Grahn. The result was an impressive series of lectures which were recorded and posted to the Web to share with the larger research community.

Documentary Film Database Trial

Periodically, we set up a trial of a database. One such case is the Filmakers Library Online, an online collection of streaming documentaries. The trial will run for the month of April 2011. If you are off campus, you will need your library database logins to check it out.

New ProQuest Interface...Coming this Year!

ProQuest and CSA have been familiar places to search database collection on our library Access Online Databases page. This year (we are estimating it will be in a few months) we will be moving to a new ProQuest interface that will include both ProQuest databases and CSA databases. This will merge two substantial database collections and we will definitely be on a learning curve on the new database and the new functions that will come with it. For now, there is a preview version that you can access. It has some of the databases you know and love, and some additional databases thrown in. Please feel free to check it out and experiment with functionality. You will need to log in using your library database logins if you are not on campus:

Google Scholar is a great resource for finding bibliographic information and sometimes even full text, but did you know you can access ITP Library content right from Google Scholar? All it takes is setting a preference!

First, log into your gmail or myitp.itp.edu account. Then go to Google Scholar. Click on Scholar Preferences at the upper right hand corner. Look for the Library Links section and type in the word transpersonal and click on the Find Library button.

Checkmark all the non-greyed results:

Then click on the Save Preferences button at the upper right. Tracking Down a DOI

The most recent edition of APA style relies heavily on the use of DOIs for journal articles. The DOI or Digital Object Identifier is sometimes hard to find. In an earlier post, we recommend a few ways to find it. For a few more options:

Search Google Scholar for the citation
Check out crossref.org's Free DOI Lookup

Example: A quick search of Google Scholar yielded a link to my article on the journal publisher site: Indigenous and Cultural Psychology: Understanding People in Context: A Book Review from the Transpersonal Psychology Perspective
The DOI is actually found in two places on the page.

You always email a librarian for a more ideas! There are still lots of articles that don't yet have a DOI, so please consult the Publication Manual for information about how to cite the article in question after trying to find the DOI.

Finding Theses and Dissertations

ITP Library provides access to ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (found on the Access Databases page on the library site), a wonderful and inspiring database full of dissertations and theses, with full text downloads for recent documents; most of the thousands of dissertations and theses are from the US and Canada, and a number of other countries around the world. However there are some other dissertation and theses repositories out there. The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations is a great starting place for finding other dissertations and theses, particularly around the world and often with full text.

Audio Archives from ATP

The JTP Archives not only allows ITP access to full text Journal of Transpersonal Psychology articles, but also conference digita audio recordings. The files are in an mp3 format and can be downloaded by ITP students, staff and faculty for free. Go to the Access Online Databases page and click on the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology (JTP) Archives Link. The link to the Audio Archives is at the top in the menu. There are quick pull-down indexes by presenter, topic, year and keyword. If you need help, please email a librarian at refdesk@itp.edu.

Transformative Digital Literacy Course Offered at ITP

Downloading Dissertations

Tips for Occasional ProQuest Dissertation Download Issues:
A few people at ITP have had problems downloading dissertations from the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database. This seems to be more of a problem for large (>10 MB) dissertations. These problems have all been from computers off campus, mostly on Mac computers.

This is the information we have gathered:
The dissertation starts to download slowly, but stops before the download can be completed. The Internet connection is “high speed.” The dissertation can easily be downloaded from a computer (PC or Mac) on campus.

Possible solutions for both Mac and PC:
• Clear your cache.
• The download could be “timing out” before downloading completely.
• It could be a computer memory problem. If too many programs are open while attempting to download, there may not be enough available memory for a large PDF.
• The problem could have to do with antivirus/firewall software on the individual computer.

If nothing else works, it is possible for us to e-mail the dissertation from a library computer, as an attachment. Since it is usually quite large we first divide it into several parts, best kept to 4MB or smaller.

If you follow these steps, you can keep up with the library blog right in the Angel Virtual Campus.

Log in to Angel Virtual Campus with your ITP-assigned logins: http://itp.angellearning.com/
On your page, click on Edit Page on the upper left side.
Click on Add Components.
Checkmark the RSS Headlines option and click Add Selected.
Click on the Pencil Icon for the RSS Headlines Section (you will see it once you mouse over the title of the section).
Select ITP: Library Research Weblog.
For items, choose 1 if you only want to see the most recent post. You can set the number higher if you want to see more posts directly in Angel.
Click Okay.

If a post interests you you can click on the post's title and it will take you to the ITP Library's blog where you can explore some more.

Searchable Meditation Bibliography

Lucid Dreaming Database

Chris Olsen, doctoral student at ITP, created the Lucid Dreaming Database as a part of his doctoral research. The site includes over 800 articles on topics related to lucid dreaming. A clip of the documentary,Wake Up! Exploring the Potential of Lucid Dreaming, is also hosted on the site. Both projects are rich contributions to the field.

Ethnography Video Database Trial

For the next month, we will have a database trial for the Ethnography Video Online database.

About the database:
"Ethnographic Video Online provides the largest, most comprehensive resource for the study of human culture and behavior – more than 750 hours and 1,000 films at completion. The collection covers every region of the world and features the work of many of the most influential documentary filmmakers of the 20th century, including interviews, previously unreleased raw footage, field notes, study guides, and more. This first release includes 226 videos totaling roughly 152 hours."

DSM-5 Proposal Online

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is a widely used diagnostic source in the mental health professions. The 5th edition has been drafted in proposal form and is available for public review. The draft is by no means in its final form and so the next two years will be a process of field tests and revision. The final form of the draft will be published in the Spring of 2013.

Osun: Search Engine for Documents

Osun.org is a search engine that allows researchers to search for certain types of documents on their topic: pdf, doc and ppt. Among the treasures to be found are articles posted by scholars on their personal sites, conference papers and presentations. The drawbacks of using the site include the following: there is no results count, you can only search type one at a time, and the source of the document takes a few extra steps or might not be able to be determined. Still worth checking out.

Early Bible Text on the Web

A 4th century CE Christian Bible manuscript with about half of the Old Testament and the earliest known complete copy of the New Testament is now on the Web. Named the Codex Sinaiticus, pages and fragments can be viewed and magnified. Some sections are only transcribed to the Greek language, but the site promises that more will be translated as the project progresses.

Simple Computer Browser Tips
If you are having computer problems try these tips first:

1. Quit your browser (not just close it).

On a Mac “closing” an application does not “quit” the application.

2. Clear your cache.

Some browsers, such as Firefox, are often set up to clear (empty) your cache automatically.

3. Restart your computer.

This often fixes a multitude of problems.

Browser Settings for Better Access

Check these settings:

1. Don’t block pop-ups.

Pop-ups can be annoying, but many databases / Web sites don’t work properly without them.

2. Accept third party cookies.

This is usually a medium privacy setting.

If the above suggestions do not help, the problem may be with antivirus software and/or firewalls.

There are many excellent browsers available for your computer. They are available for free download from the Internet. Only certain browsers are compatible for use with Angel at ITP. If you use a browser that is not compatible with Angel it may not function properly, especially with downloads from Angel.

The Gendlin Online Library, a part of the Focusing Institute site, has an excellent collection of documents about focusing to read and download.

ITP Library Adds More Resources

Three terrific resources have been added to our Access Online Database page.

CAMIO--Catalog of Art Museum Images Online--is an image collection that contains about 95,000 works of fine and decorative art from leading museums around the world. The collection ranges from 3000 BCE to the present, representing examples of Asian, African, Latin American and Western art. All content is rights-cleared for educational use.

The Chronicle of Higher Education is a leading newspaper from the world of academia. Its reputation as a source of job listings for college and university faculty and administrators is well-known but it is also heralded as a center of fresh discussion of politics, art, and ideas.

SpringerLink ebooks is a collection of electronic books (e-books) on the behavioral sciences. E-books can be conveniently accessed day or night and just like physical books, can be browsed and searched for applicability and relevance to one's subject.

The 6th edition of the APA Manual emphasizes citing the DOI for print articles. So, what is DOI?

“A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet. The publisher assigns a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically.

All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and contain a prefix and a suffix separated by a slash. The prefix is a unique number of four or more digits assigned to organizations; the suffix is assigned by the publisher and was designed to be flexible with publisher identification standards.

Collaboration via the Web becomes easier with Dimdim. Dimdim is free web conferencing that allows for up to 20 people or less to meet for free.

Some of its nicer features include sharing a whiteboard among the meeting attendees, the ability to conduct slideshows created in Powerpoint, and screen sharing which is very useful for demonstrations.

APA Manual Replacement

As some of you may know, the first printing of the recently released 6th edition of the Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association has substantial errors. Although corrections to the first printing are available on the Web, the association is offering to replace the first printing with a copy of the second corrected printing.

According to a Chronicle of Higher Education Oct. 27th article, you can contact the APA service center between Nov. 2nd and December 15th, 2009 to submit a request for a replacement for your first printing copy.

Honor Collection

The library is now offering an Honor Fiction Collection made up of books donated by our generous patrons. Based on the honor system (hence the name) simply choose a book and return it once read. It does not have to be checked out and there is no due date. The collection is almost entirely made up of fiction though a few biographies are sprinkled in.

The Academia.edu site encourages discovery and networking among scholars. There is already a section created for ITP. Its tree-like structure unfolds and connects in interesting ways. You can search by institution, name, or research topic.
As with any Web presence, it is up to you if you wish to be findable in this way. For now I am not adding my name to this resource--I want to see how it develops a bit more first, but I may do so in the future.

A: ITP dissertations and theses (and those from other colleges in the United States and Canada) can be found through the database Proquest.

ITP Reference Librarian Lucy Erman created the following instructions for how to access Full Text Dissertations and Theses.

Go to Library Web Site: http://www.itp.edu/library.
Click on Access Online Databases under the Find in Databases menu.
Scroll down the page to ProQuest.
Click on ProQuest.

Enter your login information when prompted.

One way to search for dissertations in ProQuest:
Select the Advanced tab (top of page).
In Database dropdown menu, select Interdisciplinary—Dissertations and Theses.

You can then search to find a particular dissertation:
Type in the author’s last name in the first box. Select Author from the dropdown menu.
Type a word or short phrase from the dissertation title in the box below the author’s last name.
Select Document title from the dropdown menu. Click on the Search button.
Check Results List for your document.
Select Full Text--PDF to download a copy of the dissertation or thesis.

Or search for dissertations from ITP (or any individual school):
Select School name/code from the drop down menu.
Type [institute of transpersonal psychology] in the first box. (Include [ ] )

Q: One of our most frequently asked questions is whether a specific journal article comes in full-text. Finding out is a quick and easy two-step process.
First, determine whether we have the journal itself in full-text format by following these steps:

Navigate to the library's Access Online Database page and log in.
Scroll down to A to Z (List of Full Text Journal Articles) link and click on it.
Enter the journal title in the search box and click Search.
If we carry the journal in some full-text form (either by having it on our library shelves or in a database), the journal will appear in your search results.

Second, read the notation under your search results.

It will list what years we carry.
Listed under the journal title may be a blue link(s) to one or more of our databases. In which case, click on the link and it will take you to the journal.
For journals not in the databases but on our shelves, a notation will appear "ITP Library - Print Collection."
There may be a link to the publisher's website.

Let us know if you run into any problems, need clarification of any sort, or simply want to try this with the help of a librarian.

Full Text Database: PsycBooks

PsycBooks has grown to be a collection of over 1600 full text books selected by the American Psychological Association. The great thing about this database is that the book texts are searchable, downloadable, and printable, day or night. I often recommend looking here when you are just getting started with a psychology topic that is somewhat broad to get basic information.

In browsing around the Coverage List, I noticed how many early classics are available, some all the way back to the 16th century. There are also titles as recent as 2008.

To try out the database, go to the Access Online Databases page, log in and click on the Ebsco Host link. To find the PsycBooks database, click on the APA Book Chapters link.

Firefox is a browser with great functionality for Web research. One way to take advantage of this functionality is to use keyboard shortcuts. My favorite is the Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut. This opens a new tab. Why use this? Say you are searching in a database, but want to look up a journal title in the A to Z list to see what our holdings (electronic or print) are for that title. Use Ctrl+T for PCs or Cmd+T for Macs to open another tab, click over to the tab and go back to the Access Databases Page. You haven't lost your database search and now you can check holdings for journals whenever you need it during the search session.

Not long ago Ebrary, now with over 40,000 full text books available for reading, updated their look and search features. One nice feature is when you do a basic search, a box of terms comes up along with book results. You can refine your search quickly and easily right there by checking the terms that really represent your topic.

Full Text Database: PsycArticles

PsycArticles (located in the CSA collection of databases) is an APA journal database which has full text for 63 highly respected journals published by the American Psychological Association, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group. The full text goes back to the very first issue for most of the journals and for Psychological Review goes all the way back to 1894.
The current journal coverage list consists of currently published journals that are full text in the database. The PsycArticles Journal History page lists full text journals with issue and date ranges which may have changed names or were previously produced by other publishers

A newly-improved alcohol studies database is now available online. The database contains approximately 80,000 bibliographic citations indexed by the Rutgers University Center for Alcohol Studies. The scope of the database is research and professional materials that focus on alcohol use and related consequences.

Weblogs or "blogs" have become an easy and fun way to publish ideas to the Web. You can publish a short and finite collection of posts to promote your business/career, or you can decide to create a topical or research focus to which you continue to add to daily or weekly. Either way, you are creating something that you can share with others in your professional life.
Here at the library, we have been tremendously happy with Blogger/Blogspot, a free blogging and hosting service owned by Google. There are many more, like Vox.com, typepad.com, and wordpress.com to name a few. The services are either free with ads or very inexpensive.
As a professional resource, think about how this fits your "brand" and your vision for your career, whether clinical, academic or entrepreneurial. You can always decide to upgrade to a more formal site later, start additional blogs for different topics or talents, or delete your blog when it no longer serves its purpose.

Following the Citation Trail

Finding who has cited a particular article has always been useful in the process of research. We have two database collections that do just that: CSA and now ProQuest. If an article has been cited in other articles, a "Cited By" link will appear, allowing you to link to the other articles.
ProQuest recently added this feature and there are two reasons why this feature is so useful.
-A heavily cited article in a given field is proven to be influential and important.
-The "cited by" link gives you access to more articles which may be related to your topic.

Professionalize: LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a site that helps members to stay connected professionally, find an expert, and possibly find a job. I am noticing more and more ITP staff, students and faculty becoming members. It represents a level of professionalism that puts you "in the game" and really helps you keep track of colleagues who move away or change career paths.
You wonder if you can really get a job through LinkedIn. A long-time friend of mine was contacted by two different recruiters about two different jobs. She wasn't looking for a job but the second job inquiry really matched her career path and was too good to resist. She started working at the new job a month ago. She is in marketing. If it isn't there yet, I think this type of recruitment will eventually be just as common in education and psychology as it is in business now.
There is still the question of privacy. Just keep in mind this is like your business card. Put into LinkedIn what you want the public to see.
I haven't tried the "find an expert" aspect yet. I probably will eventually in my line of work. Please feel free to share your own experience of LinkedIn or other networking sites.

Zotero is an extension that works only with the Firefox Web browser.

Extremely user-friendly, Zotero goes beyond storing the author, title, and publication fields, and
exporting them into a bibliography. It has the ability to:

Finding Scholars

Researchers sometimes forget that people are a great resource too. When you notice that several articles are by a particular scholar, you might consider checking the Web to see if they have their own Web site about their area of research.

Use Google or another search engine to search for the scholar of interest. Search on their name in quotes (for Google) - "Firstname Lastname" - and if their name is not unusual you might consider adding a keyword for their area of expertise.

On some sites, all you may get is a contact email address, while others may include a CV, full text articles - both published and in press, and other resources.

Consider emailing a scholar whose work resonates with yours. Most of the time, you will have a positive experience and a contact for the future. Be sure you are clear about who you are and your affiliation (e.g. graduate student at ITP working on your dissertation) and positively frame any questions you may have. And expressing gratitude goes a long way.

Author Searching in CSA

When you are searching for works by a particular author in CSA, keep in mind that there are often variants on names.
For example, if you are looking for the works by Elizabeth Targ, you might need to look under Targ, E. and Targ, Elizabeth. Some names have more variants.
In CSA, you can search the Author Index for more name variants, so that you don't miss any.
To get to the Author Index, once you are on the CSA search page, click on Search Tools, then click on the Indexes Tab. From the pull-down menu, click on the Author Index for the database you want to search. Type in the name variants - last name, first name - and check each one you want to include. Then click on the search button at the left. This will create a search that accomodate all the variants you have found.

Finding the Elusive Meta-analysis

Having talked to several students who are working on DQPs, I wanted to highlight a previous post on finding specific types of studies in PsycInfo.
You can focus in on just meta-analyses and literature reviews and then combine this search with your topic.
Also, PubMed offers a clinical query page where you can search for systematic reviews in the health sciences.

Manage your Blog Readings

If you want to keep up with blogs and news sites, try using a feed reader. One free and easy-to-use Web-based reader is Bloglines.

What is great about it is that it "keeps" your readings until you are ready to view them, then you can decide to keep them longer by checkmarking the item. The items you don't find interesting just disappear after you view them.

Once you create an account, all you need to do is find the Web address of the blog, or news site feeds. You find the feed Web address link, click on it, then copy and paste it into the reader. You can search right from within Bloglines for feeds. Or try going to your favorite blog, journal site, or news site to find a feed address.

On this site, the Site Feed is on the upper right-hand side.

You can find transpersonal video content on YouTube. Try searching on your favorite transpersonal psychology topic or person. I found content on Ken Wilber, Amma, and Ram Dass. I searched for Stan Grof and found a video discussing holotropic breathwork.

Dictionaries: Print vs. Web

The Web is now the home of many wonderful and useful resources, but when you need to find a definition are Web dictionaries recommended?

First, let's compare print with Web dictionaries. Traditional print dictionaries from respected publishers have a long history of scrupulous attention to detail and a good reputation.

Dictionaries on the Web can be created by anyone: a respected publisher, an individual (scholar or not), or an organization. You have to evaluate who created this, whether or not there is bias, and whether or not this source is reliable.

Now let's look at the situations and what your options are:
Quick definition look-up for your own edification: Either one. Just to remember to evaluate a Web source first.
For your paper or dissertation: The most respected source you can find. At this time, this still means a print source. Now if you are thinking of convenience remember that there are also print dictionaries in digital form in ebrary. This is a source you have access to 24/7 with full text searchability but you can cite it and trust it as if it is print.

Try A Tag Cloud to Get the Big Picture

A tag cloud is a cluster of terms which can be generated by frequency of use in a web document. Usually the tag cloud is generated by tags that are coded already into the document but TagCrowd allows you to paste in any text and create a tag cloud. Try it out! It can help you see big themes in a new way.

Optimizing Online Research--Browsers

We wanted to share a few tips to improve your online research experience.

Use Internet Explorer (IE) or Firefox browser. These two are the most stable and compatible with library research databases. If you don't have Firefox, it is a free download on the Web at http://www.mozilla.com.
Take advantage of your Links bar (IE) /Bookmarks Toolbar Folder (Firefox). This gives you quick access to your favorite websites. You can even create folders for your links on the toolbar.

Be sure you have Adobe Reader on your computer. This free download is the best pdf reader to use. Although Macs have a reader called Preview, we have found that Adobe Reader has better results. Just go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
Always talk to a librarian for help with your particular situation. We spend all our time finding better ways to do research and we love to share our discoveries.
